If your ID is lost or completely invalid, California law offers an alternative solution called Credible Identifying Witnesses.
To proceed without a valid ID, you must bring two individuals to your appointment who can act as your witnesses. They must meet the following strict legal criteria:
- They must personally know you.
- They must have their own current, valid government-issued photo ID (such as a valid driver's license or passport).
- They must not be named in the document and cannot have a financial or beneficial interest in the transaction.
During the appointment, the notary will place them under oath, and they must swear or affirm under penalty of perjury that you are indeed the person named in the document and that you do not possess another acceptable form of identification.
